Evolution of primate intelligence

چکیده

First, what do we mean by intelligence? this is a slippery issue, as any psychology student will tell you it is more than just complex behavior many complex behaviors among animals do not impress us as particularly intelligent for example, we don’t think that homing pigeons are particularly smart, in spite of their ability to find their way home from distant, unknown places presumably, intelligence involves flexible behavior, the ability to solve novel problems

The evolution of primate general and cultural intelligence.

There are consistent individual differences in human intelligence, attributable to a single 'general intelligence' factor, g. The evolutionary basis of g and its links to social learning and culture remain controversial. Conflicting hypotheses regard primate cognition as divided into specialized, independently evolving modules versus a single general process. To assess how processes underlying ...

Social life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size

Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...

Evolution of brain size and juvenile periods in primates.

This paper assesses selective pressures that shaped primate life histories, with particular attention to the evolution of longer juvenile periods and increased brain sizes. We evaluate the effects of social complexity (as indexed by group size) and foraging complexity (as indexed by percent fruit and seeds in the diet) on the length of the juvenile period, brain size, and brain ratios (neocorte...

Social Relationships, Social Cognition, and the Evolution of Mind in Primates

In the first half of the 20th century, primate cognition was studied almost exclusively in the laboratory, with single individuals as subjects and objects of various sorts as test stimuli (see Tomasello & Call, 1997, for review). As field studies began to proliferate in the 1960s and 1970s, however, it became increasingly clear that the primate mind evolved in a complex social environment, and ...

Cetaceans and Primates: Convergence in Intelligence and Self-Awareness

Cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises and whales) have been of greatest interest to the astrobiology community and to those interested in consciousness and selfawareness in animals. This interest has grown primarily from knowledge of the intelligence, language and large complex brains that many cetaceans possess. The study of cetacean and primate brain evolution and cognition can inform us about the c...
